All Roads Lead to Local
The GMC curates locally-made, sustainably produced goods from around the USA! The small business owners featured are researched for their goals, commitment to sustainability, and how they contribute to their community. Our team thinks outside of the box to market them, educate our customers of their practices and who they are as small business owners! Hopefully our mission to support our fellow makers, crafters, and creators inspires you to support a local artist, crafter, creator, or maker within our country and maybe within your own community, down the street! Remember no matter what road you take, they all lead to someone local. We can help you find them!

Hi! We are Tina and Blake Mayberry, creators and owners of the Golden Mercantile Coop. It sounds trite, and perhaps is, but in this case it is the truth - it all started with a dream. Our dream is to bring local food, arts, and crafts to local communities. We experimented over the years in a bunch of different forms - helping to create a farmer’s market in our hometown of Glenwood, IA. More recently, we bought an acreage in Golden where we’ve experimented with urban farming and sustainable living. But we are both educators at heart, and professionally - Blake a college professor, and Tina, up until recently, a public school teacher. After being cooped up in our homes during the pandemic, teaching remotely, connecting with our community through screens, we think that fate sent us those dreams as premonitions.
We strive to create authentic experiences, and make real connections with people - come down to the store and check it out for yourself. Meet people in your community, and all kinds of interesting folks from all corners of the globe.
More importantly, we are not an online store, and we don’t spend a lot of time on social media. We are busy meeting people, face-to-face, and building relationships that create sustainable communities. We are old-fashioned AF, and that is not a hashtag, it’s a way of life. A smile, a handshake, knowing our customers by first name - that’s what we are trying to build. If you are tired of having followers, or being followed all the time, finding the perfect lighting for your Instagram post, come to the Co-op for something real.

By investing in a community membership you are helping to build a revenue stream for the Coop which helps to pool resources together. In this way, offsetting rising labor and retail rent costs in downtown Golden, CO is essential for small mom and pop shops like ours.
Food for thought...your membership doesn’t go to some CEO relaxing on a private island or some trust fund family - it supports our local small business and our employees.
Supply chain issues have recently highlighted the importance of supporting local food producers and manufacturers. Your membership to the Co-op is a commitment to support those local producers, and a hedge against the uncertainties of the global economy. Strong local economies, where money recirculates through the community, are sustainable communities.
Studies show that “being a local” adds years to your life. For real, look it up yourself. Becoming a member of the Co-op means that we’ll get to know you on a first name basis (membership comes with a cool laminated card that you get your write your name on; big perk!), and you’ll feel like a local. Whether you are new to town, or been here since the Buffalo Bill days, become a member a join our community!
